The study published in Annals of Internal Medicine showed that statins have benefit of lowering cholesterol and preventing heart disease in seniors, but the medications also carry the risk of side effects. Side effects of statins such as muscle pain, weakness, and small changes in thinking can ultimately cause harm to seniors. There are good studies that show the benefits of statins however, not enough studies in older adults are there to assess the severity of the side effects. How would you weigh the risk and the benefit of the statins?
