Declaring a public health emergency, Governor Deval Patrick announced that Zohydro shall not be prescribed, dispensed, or administered in Massachusetts. The Department of Public Health notes that Zohydro contains higher levels of hydrocodone than any other hydrocodone combination products and is not an “abuse-deterrent” formulation. The Department will also notify all controlled substance registrants once the prohibition is lifted; however, this will not be until further safeguards are in place to combat the state’s epidemic of opioid abuse and addiction. What other measures are there to control opioid-related overdose and addiction?
