OverdosingThe FDA has proposed stronger safety language on labels of long-acting opioid such as Oxycontin, Morphine, Oxycodone and Fentanyl in response to the epidemic of overdoses and deaths. The labels need to highlight dangers of abuse and possible death when taking these medicines long term. Drug labels will no longer be indicated for moderate to severe pain. By the end of this year, drug labels will need to be indicated for pain severe enough to require round the clock therapy and only for those without adequate pain relief from alternative medicines. Do you think this will help improve thoughtful prescribing of these medicines?
