Weight control is an important topic and with obesity being an epidemic in the US, parents of overweight children are concerned about this issue. In order to help their teens, parents are likely to take the wrong path when talking to children about their concerns. JAMA Pediatrics recently published a study regarding the way parents communicate with their overweight children. The study found that parents who used weight related terms in their conversation had teens who were more likely to use unhealthy behaviors such as laxative use. Parents who talked about healthy dieting however were more successful in helping their children control weight. The study suggests that parents should avoid using any weight related terms when talking to children to avoid development of eating disorders.
