The Lancet Neurology published an international study regarding the effectiveness of alteplase in patients with ischemic stroke. The study found that alteplase used within 6 hours of a stroke could improve patients’ quality of life 18 months after stroke. Patients in alteplase group were experiencing less pain and discomfort compared to those who were not given the drug. However, within the first week of treatment, alteplase can cause fatal bleed in brain as a serious risk. It is important that health professionals inform patients’ family about the risks and benefits of such treatment.
