A recent cohort study showed that the long-term use of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART) appears to be cardioprotective for HIV-infected children and teens. The study included nearly 600 HIV-infected and uninfected patients from 14 pediatric HIV clinics across the U.S.  Cardiac function was better in HIV-infected children receiving HAART compared to those who were infected and did not receive HAART and those exposed to HIV but not infected.  How would you counsel parents of children taking HAART regarding the importance of adherence?
