heart_Fin FDA reported Tuesday that Azithromycin (Zithromax, Zmax), may increase the risk of fatal irregular heart rhythm. Those most at risk are people with current QTc prolongation, low serum potassium and magnesium, slow heart rate, and concurrent use of antiarrhythmics. Due to this finding, the FDA recommends healthcare providers should be aware of this risk and prescribing should be based on the presence of these risk factors. How will this warning change the way you counsel patients taking azithromycin?
