An analysis of drug overdoses conducted by the CDC demonstrates a consecutive 11 year rise in the number of deaths caused by drug overdose, increasing from 16,849 deaths in 1999 to 38,329 in 2010. Pharmaceuticals accounted for nearly 60% of overdose deaths in 2010, with opioids being the most prevalent. However, prescription medications commonly used for mental health issues such as benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and antipsychotics were also noted to be a significant portion of the drugs responsible. What role do you and your colleagues play in the safe use of commonly abused prescription medications?
