A study published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association indicated that corticosteroid injections may worsen tennis elbow down the road.  This study randomized 165 participants 18 years and older who had tennis elbow in one arm for more than 6 weeks to receive one of four interventions: a corticosteroid injection, a corticosteroid injection plus physiotherapy, a placebo injection or a placebo injection plus physiotherapy.  The study authors found that the participants who received steroid injections had poorer improvement and greater recurrence of tennis elbow after 1 year compared to placebo.  How comfortable are you in recommending only non-pharmacological therapies for certain disease states?
