A study published in the journal Neurology states that although rare, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) have been associated with an increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage. The meta-analysis included 16 observational studies with information on over half a million people. The researchers stated that it is not possible to definitely blame the SSRIs for bleeding in the brain, but suggested physicians to be careful when prescribing to patients at risk. How do you think this information will change prescribing of SSRIs? What patient population would you counsel on this possible adverse event?
