A recent article published in the BMJ evaluated use of benzodiazepines by 1,063 elderly patients and the risk of developing dementia.  During this 20-year prospective, cohort study, patients who took a benzodiazepine were 60% more likely to develop dementia compared to those that didn’t take any benzodiazepines.  How does this change the way you counsel your elderly patients? What are your thoughts on benzodiazepine use in the elderly population?
